Hard drive questions

Hey everyone, I need some help regarding hard drives. Since my desktop died I got the laptop that is in my siggy and I've had it for a year now. When I had my desktop I had all my music on there with Itunes and I downloaded the music from some server (bearshare possibly). Well I've been really bummed out how I have no music anymore and I want to be able to have it again on my computer so I can listen to it while on here and also to load the music on my iPhone. My only big concern is the amount of space it takes up. I was told that 1. the bearshare or w.e server you download them from can actaully mess your computer up 2. it takes up a whole lot of space. So since this is a new laptop I was wondering if I got a external harddrive would I be able to have Itunes with all the music on there and the server I download it off of (weather bearshare or w.e) on the external hard drive so it takes up no space at all on my laptop?
 
The answer to your questions...

1. With any file sharing program you take the chance on downloading malware/viruses with whatever you are trying to download. And for the most part is Illegal.

2. Unless you have loads and loads of music, you will never use up a 250 gb drive.
 
I know I am going get stuff said to me about th file sharing program, but its not like I am the only one here who uses them to d.l music.

So I am guessing I would be able to have everything on the external harddrive without it being on my laptop?
 
Yes. But I would keep the programs on the internal drive and just keep the music on the external.
 
Bearshare has loads of malicious software on it. Downloading "free" music is a good way to get viruses and malicious software on your hard drive.

Download your music from Napster or another reputable source and pay for it.
 
Just curious but why would you keep the programs on the internal drive and only the music on the external?
 
Easier that way. I would not install a program to an external drive. Basically they are just used for extra storage and to go between computers. I make one partition for windows and programs and another partition for my data.
 
1 - in general illegaly downloading anything is an easy way to get a virus (though i can't say i have ever got a virus from music)
2 - you shouldn't be worried about music taking up space, MP3's are usually around 3MB so 3000 songs and your only up to 9GB
