hard drive reads as needs to be formatted

So I am working on a friends computer and when it goes to turn on it will go through the first boot up showing the windows sign and then screen goes blank. I pulled the drive out and tried to hook it up through usb to my desktop so I can view it that way. When it comes up it shows as not even being formatted and the disk management shows it as a new partition. Is it possible for it to just not being shown? and its that corrupted and bad?

Run the drive manufacturers disk diagnostic program on it. Most likely the drive has errors and it can't be read properly. What brand hard drive is it?
