hard drive running

can u tell me why when i use certain programmes like msn my hard drive is sometimes churning away in the background making it run slow.
If i go to windows task manager i see something running called iexplore exe. This seems to be listed twice with one being around 35 k and other 14k mem usage.

is it 2 listings of ieplore.exe? or is it explorer.exe and iexplore.exe, explorer.exe is the desktop and iexplore.exe is the Internet Explrer browser. The hard drive spins up when running msn because it's loading the program from the drive but if it makes the whole computer run slow you probably have a full disk or something slowing it down like adware r spyware, maybe caused by one of those msn add ons?

iexplore.exe is the process for Internet Explorer. I don't think you should have 2 running, but I could be wrong (I don't use it). Now, MSN will open Internet Explorer as a web browser even if you have another browser set as the default, so if this is running (and you haven't opened it yourself) I would say MSN is probably to blame.

EDIT: Good call with the iexplore and explorer bluedishwater.

Try killing the process and see what happens.
