hard-drive sata clarification

So I just got a seagate hard-drive, at 64 cache, 7200 rpm, and the store label said it was sata 3gb/s. So I figured it was a 3gb/s, and I only got it, because I couldn't find a 6 gb/s that had what I needed, but anyway, the box on the system requirements says:
GB/s Sata interface connector or motherboard or add-in card (backward compatible to SATA 3Gb/s)
And the specifications says 'backward compatible to sata 3gb/s"
I don't know anything about hard-drives, it's one thing I never really touched up on, nor done research, is that suppose to mean that it's compatible to both 6 gb/s and 3gb/s, and can run at a 6 gb/s speed?
 
Lower rated computer components don't run at higher speeds, it's the other way around. If a component has a higher rating but the system it's going into is a lower rating, then it is backwards compatible in the fact it will downclock to the backwards speed.

Eh, I'm still iffy here. My motherboard supports both 6gb/s, and 3 gb/s, I have some ports of both, so would it run at a speed of 6 if I put it in the 6? I didn't really understand that.
 
No. It will run at 3Gbps no matter what port you put it on because it is a 3gbps drive. If you had a 6gbps drive and plugged it in a 3gbps port it would only run at 3gbps.

I guess, so, I kind of figured, but I'd imagine a 3 gb/s would work in a 6 slot anyway, that's oddly setup/said, but thanks. I figured it was a 3 speed anyway, but they actually sent me a better one, than what I purchased, and I got it for a sale price. Enjoy your week-end, kind sir.

Yes, the 3 works in a 6 but will only work at 3 speed.
