Hard Drive Situation

Here's the situation...I have an Acer Aspire 4520 with 120 GB HDD, Windows Vista Home Premium OS. The problem is that my computer boots but I cant do anything because I only have a little bit of C: space left. The hard drive is partitioned into about 50 Gb for c: and 50 Gb for D: and I have used most of the c: but the d: is empty.

I figured I could easily put an internal 500 GB hard drive in there but I can't really boot to clone my hd to transfer for new hard drive.

but i can boot into safe mode fine if that makes any difference.

What should I do?

Another problem is that I do not have a vista home premium 32 bit disc.. but I have the product key sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

So i guess what I am asking is, A.) can I clone from Safe Mode and How B.) Can I delete Recovery portion D: to increase C: drive space C:) How can i get a copy of windows vista home premium 32 bit if i would just copy the main files to an external hard drive and install a new hard drive and then operating system then copy the files back to the computer.

Any comments probably will help. Thanks!
 
I believe you can shrink drive D and give that space to drive C. You can do this in disk management.
 
As a temporary measure, copy some data from your C: drive to your D: drive, preferably larger files like videos or something like that.

I'm not sure if Vista Home Premium has the capability to shrink the D: drive built-in to it's Disk Management. If it does, then use it to shrink the size of the D: drive which will allow you to then expand the size of you C: drive. In case you can't do it with Vista alone you could always download ****** Partition Manager and use it.

Will I be able to download and do this in safe mode? Normal boot up doesn't really work because it is so slow
 
if you boot to safe mode with networking it will work. However, you should be able to use Vistas partition manager to manage the partitions.
(wont be able to use this method in safe mode, or with classic start bar) click start and enter "partition" into the search bar. it will bring up the partition manager. from there, they can guide you. I havent a clue how to reclaim space.
 
Easiest solution that comes to mind is to boot up a linux distro as a live CD and copy/move/delete any needed files.
Use GParted as a live cd to manage any partitions.

Least, that's what i would do.
 
how can i scan when im not able to do anything in regular boot? does scanning in safe mode suffice or do i have to get a bootable disc or something?
