i am helping someone with a new computer and the person's old computer is at least 10 yrs. old. It runs on Windows 95. It is a 96-97 Compaq Presario. I want to put the hard drive in an enclosure and I need to know if it is a 3.5 or a different size. It's about 2gigs.

Thanks in advance

If it is too old, then it is a 5.25in... but ill bet its a 3.5, as the size is just right for an old one. I also cant reccomend using it as an external USB drive, some of them do not work right for enclosures. You could spend about $80 like i did and get a nice 2.5in and an enclosure.

taking stuff off the computer.

See the problem is that the computer is so old that it won't even put stuff onto a floppy without being stubborn. it will copy one minute and then not the next. I don't know what to do. The only thing that I think I can do is open it up and take the hard drive out of it. The problem is that I dont care about keeping the hard drive what I care about is taking info off the computer.

I get you now, but it is much easier just to put it in another computer and make it the slave drive. I had to do the exact same thing a while back.

Heck no. Even the drives from the mid-80s aren't 5.25". That was just a certain line, it really had nothign to do with age.

I stand corrected on that. But my advice for him still stands, i would just slave the drive into another computer.

Well the first 1GB harddrive was a IBM in 1980 and was 550lbs.
The first 5.25 harddrive was a Seagate in1980.
The first 3.25 harddrive was a Rodime in 1983.
The firstIDE was W/D in 1985.
But the first harddrives that looks like todays really came out 1988 when they made them thinner, in the mid 80s most did have the 5.25 drives, becauce all of the 3.25 drives till 1988 were like 3 inches thick!
