i was looking at some hard drives and i noticed some were 3.5in and some were 2.5in. which ones work with sony notebooks? and as long as its the same size with the same connector, will it work?

and how do you transfer the information from the old one to the new one (step by step) i have a mass storage device, can i do it with that?

Usually copy/pasting everything is fine. I wouldn't copy/paste the OS but some people have done it. You'll have to partition/format the drive before you do anything though.

You could also use Ghost or similar program to make an image of the drive restore it to the new one. Most hard drive manufacturers have a program you can use to clone drives that is free to use as well.

o wait, can i just backup onto a mass storage and then restore with the new one in? if so how do i do it and what are some tips to know?

It's not as simple as "backing up" the info, you really need to "clone" the drive. Cloning makes a complete copy of all system files and transfers them to another hard drive. Backing up usually justs backs up the folders and such, not the registry and system files.

If you mean backing up your internal HDD to an external and trying to boot from it instead of the internal I dont think that is possible. You would have to install windows on the external then backup your internal HDD to the external. Then repeat for the new internal.

Just thought too, It also depends whether or no your mobo can boot from an external HDD. Go into the bios and see what options you have for that.

I think Pheonix is one of the F# keys. You should have enough time to hit them all and the delete key if it doesn't tell you (it should say somewhere even if it's got a full screen logo)
