Hard drive space shows up incorrectly

I bought a hard drive for my new rig, and it had a 500 gig capacity. I installed windows, and it showed up with the proper size, but due to a virus prompted re-install, I wiped the drive and reinstalled windows. Now, this very night, while I was installing the splinter cell double agent demo, I noticed that my hard drive only shows up as having a total of 127gigs, leaving nineteen fre! What can I do short of a re-install of window? please help, it would be a major pain to have to back everything up and so forth.:(

Do you have SP1 installed for XP? That is about the size that would be accessible on a hard drive for XP if you didn't have SP1 installed...

sorry, my hard drive model is a seagate barricuda ST3500641AS, according to my device manager, but when I search the model No. on the seagate site, nothing shows up.
*edit* I have SP2

Hmm..., well run an error check on the HDD and if that doesn't fix it, I would recommend reinstalling Windows again as I believe what has happened is the file that would fix this problem in the SP1 area of Windows has either been corrupted or deleted...

What version of XP did you install with? You need an SP1 or later install to be able to format the drive to full capacity with the windows installer.

he said he has sp2 two posts above yours.
shame on you for not reading the topic before posting in it :P

you don't need to reinstall windows just to replace a corrupted SP1 file.
you can go into the control panal, add/remove programs, then select the 'show patches (or whatever it is) to display all the Windows patches and hotfixes. if you know what hotfix or patch the file is associated with, you can remove just that patch and redownload it. otherwise just go down the list uninstalling them to basicly remove all the patches and hotfixes. then just reinstall SP1 and 2 from the microsoft site.

No he says he has SP2 now, he didn't say if he formatted the drive with an XP SP1 disk or later version.

I'm not sure if it even had sp1 on it, I used an msn disk. I'll try and find the one I used.

go to control panel system and look. if that dont work go to add remove programs and see if you hvae like a -microsoft windows xp sp2 upgrade- or soemthing

Having SP2 now isn't the problem it is what version of XP the drive was formatted with. The remaining space can be partitioned now with SP2, but if you want it all on the same partition you have to partition it with an SP1/2 disc (assuming its the primary drive)

Its the only drive on there, could there possibly be a second partition on it? if so, how do I change all that, as in, how specifically do I do it?
