Hard drive space

So i got a question.
I just built my computer 2 weeks ago, and now i have a few games but not near 160g's and it says i have 4.59gb's left.. lol Is it an error? or whats going on

When you create a partition for a OS, or Space you allocated space to that certain partition. What oscaryu1 is trying to say is that you may have not allocated all the space you wanted on your main partition

Go into the control panel>administrative tools>computer management>storage section and look for the Disk Management option. That will show all drives both hard drives and optical(cd/dvd) installed on the system there. You will see a large black section if the primary created was small in size.

Generally the Windows installers doesn't leave more then a few meg at either end when simply pressing enter to accept the amount of drive space it detects available however. You have to manually reduce that amount to see any large space left unallocated. When you open the storage section simply look for the Disk Management tool there.

ok i checked, and i only have one partition using 149g and i have 4% left. My only other drive w/ a partition is my cd/rom drive. And i looked at my programs and there is nothing at all HUGE that is going to take up 140g. I have less on here then on my 80g laptop...

I have a few games installed with vista on a 320gb drive and only have 196gb left. So if mine were a 160gb drive i would have 36gb left. Are you using vista by chance?

Also under computer what does it say the total drive size is?

i just trace where everything is, go into my hard drive and see where the largest files come from... i would do that but skip the windows folder...

^^^ geez some one is up at 4: am

You can easily find the largest files using programs like Treesize. See if you can download a trial somewhere.

If you open the MyComputer you can easily right click on any drive(not optical without a disk in it) and that will bring up a pie chart showing how much is used and what is free. The screenshot here will show how three hard drives look when right clicking on each of the MyComputer drive icons and clicking on properties.

ok so i figured it out.. I checked my partitions and they where fine, my pie charts where accurate, my disk defragmenter was also accurate. All the information was accurate! I when to add/remove programs when to largest to smallest and only had 2 games installed and deleted one of those and freed up about 2 gigs of space. So i was almost up to 5 gigs of free space. So i was like screw it I KNEW i shouldnt of bought that POS hitachi it was too good to be true.
So i whent to my c drive and before i went to program files i realized that i had a fraps folder in my C drive. So i moved that into my Program files.. and walllahh! i have 138g of free space.. So im not sure why that made my computer think Fraps was using 134gigs of space lol.. But i figured it out! Thanks so much everyone.

O p.s im running XP

Vista should die! hah

FRAPS is one thing I haven't even used in a long time. But it sounds like there was a limit set on the amount of drive space FRAPS could use. The small space represented the amount of space left for capturing with that program not the actual physical space seen on the drive.

Once you moved the folder you disconnected FRAPsS from the limited amount it had available now seeing no folder full of files. Apparently FRAPS was telling Windows there was only so much space available? Sounds that way.
