Hard Drive stopped being recognized

For some reason my Seagate hard drive is no longer being recognized by my pc. It is not in MY COMPUTER, Bios, or disk manager. I have no idea what happened I have not been inside to computer at all and it was working just fine a day or so ago. I checked seagates website and my model number is not listed under the firmware updates, so I have no idea what happened.

There is no clicking, all cables are fine, I tried different sata ports including power and still nothing.

Any ideas?

The thing you can do is -
- Check HDD on other computer
- Check jumper settings of HDD
- Give it for replacement/repair if in warranty.

Please do check your HDD on other computers, hope that might solve probelm.

Seeing as the drive is SATA I'm not too worried about a jumper. The only thing that isn't obvious that you've checked is the data cable. I'd imagine it's securely connected as you've tried it on other ports and if it was disconnected you'd have noticed then.

I think trying it on another PC is worth while.

Does Seagate have some kind of utility to test Harddrives? I know Western Digital does and is able to give you a trouble code if something is wrong that you can give to the people for RMA'ing purposes.

Ok I just pulled the hard drive and hooked it up to 2 different transfer kits and neither worked. I hooked it up to a usb data transfer kit and it powers on but will not show in Device manager, disk Manager or My computer. There is no odd noises or excessive heat. Then I plugged it into my hard drive enclosure and that to did not work.

After I pulled the hard drive I noticed the following message in device manager with a yellow exclamation mark.

"a2rnr08h ide controller"

I tried to update the driver and received a message stating that drivers could not be found, I put the Mobo disks in and still nothing.

Ok so after doing some research I found that this is a common problem with these drives and Seagate has an update for it. While I went and downloaded the ISO update and booted into it, but I got the following message while trying to install the new firmware

"scanning for controllers
scanning for devices
scanning for devices on Generic PCI ATA

Found 0 Devices

Scanning for devices on Generic PCI ATA
Found 1 Device
Scan complete, 2 controllers and 1 device detected

****************
Exit with Code 2

****************
Error: Specific Model Not found.. Expected"

I have no clue why it cant find the exact model because I triple checked the model before trying this and I unhooked my primary Western Digital drive while doing this, so I dont know why it cant find it?

Although the interesting thing is that on the box it has the model number as ST3500641AS-RK, but on the hard drive itself the model number is ST3500320AS and that is the number I searched and found out that this is a common problem. The serial numbers are the same.

So at this point I have no idea what else to try and I will tell you this I will NEVER again buy a single Seagate product..............when I was purchasing this I had a bad feeling about it and I STILL put the WD drive down and got this POS instead

It does sound like you got hit with this http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931
but if you tried to update and it didn't work I'd contact their customer support. I believe seagate has offered to pay for data recovery for drives affected by it.

Customer support..............they have that:confused: that's news to me seeing how I waited on hold for 45 minutes with no response and I'm still waiting for a response to the email I sent them dddaaayyyss ago. I think retarded trolls could do a better job with customer service than Seagate does.

Instead of paying for data recovery I would much rather have them issue me a refund so I can purchase a different drive, like a Western Digtial lol.

The only thing I dont understand is how this happens due to firmware, I had no other symptoms at all. I didnt get any errors, slow transfers, pauses......nothing, then one day the drive is just gone

You should probably just stick to Western Digital hard drives because you will never have problems like these. Also WD's fail far less than Seagates (first hand experience)

yeah I should have stuck with what has always worked for me. I had a WD in my hand and chose the Seagate

WDs aren't free from problems. I have multiple seagate drives running without issue. One is almost 10 years old.

Someone can come by here and tell you that WDs fail all the time and that they are complete garbage. Unless you've both had a room of like 10000 drives running until failure you can't say WD or Seagate fail more often. It's just bad luck.

Yeah I see your point, I have had a WD for over 10 years and it is still running like a champ. All I have ever owned is WD and this is my first Seagate and it has not been kind to me at all lol

I will never buy another Seagate either. The POS gives so many errors that windows puts it in PIO mode. Two different computers and same shit.

Seagate says the drive does not need a firmware update, but it obviously does. It won't accept the firmware update that's available due to the serial number either.

Way to shoot yourself in the foot Seagate. So many people are going to boycott you bastards.

I'd return it if I hadn't pulled it out of it's enclosure. Nothing like pissing away over a hundred bones.

Ok guys. I have the Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB HD.
The model number is Very similar.
Model: ST380013AS
Serial Number: 5mr 1057J

I am having a very similar problem. My computer will not boot. It gets to the windows loading screen and goes black and that's it. When i unplug it, it boots and works fine!
Any idea's? I think im going to call up Seagate and see what they will do.
Please, Any ideas guys?

Call Seagate and have them give you an RMA number, oh by the way you will have to pay for shipping to and from Seagate :(. I just threw my Seagate drive away never to buy another one. Not only did their drive fail prematurely but the customer has to pay shipping both ways.............well SCREW YOU Seagate.

Just get the Proper firmware installed and you should be fine.

Seagate had a major firmware *-up some time ago, the drives would suddenly "disappear" after some time of use. AFAIK if you didn't update the firmware before this happened, your drive is pretty much bricked. AFAIK Seagate offers free data recovery, though, if your drive is affected with the firmware bug.

Wow...but, do you guys think my drive was one that was effected? I read that link and it said it effected the Seagate 7200.11 drives and not the 7200.7 drives. I will call them tomorrow but would like to know if you guys think my drive was one effected or not?
also, a firmware update will be virtually useless since it's too late, right? My computer will not boot with the drive connected. This just started happening about a month ago.
Thanks
