Hard Drive Troubles..Plz Help

Alright, so I was listening to music in iTunes and typing an e-mail. Then, I decided to open up Ableton Live 7, at which point my computer decided to freeze. I restarted it, and windows wouldn't boot up. So, I went into my boot menu and set it to Fail-safe defaults. My computer works now, but it's really really slow. I already tried defragging, it helped a little, but it's still too slow to use. Should I format my hard drive? If not, what should I do?

Thanks for whatever help you can give.

How much RAM do you have in your system?

Here's a shortcut that will help you find out if you don't know.

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type "Msinfo32"
Look at the "Total Physical Memory"

1 gigabyte of memory should be sufficient if you are running Windows XP. I would backup all files you really want before downloading the following program and running it.
Download CCleaner and run it and see if that helps. http://www.ccleaner.com/ Sometimes Windows gets loaded up with malicious software that bogs it down.

So, the good news is CCleaner took 3Gb of files off my hard drive.
The bad news is it didnt really affect my computer's speed.
Any other ideas?

hey, just press ctrl+shift+esc and under the performance TAB check to see if your pc is nut using too much resourcces, if so goto processes tab and shut down the process/es that are taking up most res.(make sure they are not imp process). Also prevent the unwanted processes to start up
