Bought a new hitachi 80 GB travelstar HD for my thinkpad T22 laptop. Plan on using it as a dats drive in my HDD adapter. installed it and tried to format it in disk management but when the tool is nearky finished it posts an unknown error and closes out, leaving me with an unformatted, unusable drive. Anyone have a clue as to what is happening? running windows xp sp2

You can simply right click to format any drive before a partition is created initially seeing a logical drive created. That's when you can simply right click on the drive's icon in explorer or in the disk management and choose the format option. You may need the drive tools direct from Hitachi for creating the one or partitions if you custom size there or a driver set since you are using an external adapter.

actually its not an external drive, it connects through the ultrabay port (cd rom floppy drive). It is connected through a secondary ide/atapi controler (not a usb or external card port)
