Thanks for the pics (Stranglehold) they were very helpful. I keep thinking about your signature though.

Building the ark. I believe it was Noah and his family under the direction of God.
Sorry, it just kept eating at me.

Since you now verified what I was referring to earlier about the drive there being an older 2gb ATA66 drive. Without having jumper settings for master, slave, and cable select it sounds like that's an older ide drive made specifically for Dell already preset to the cable select position. That's how they made them.

Hows this one
The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance -- it is the illusion of knowledge.

Its just 2gb, you could put music on it or something, have you tried hooking it up togather with you main drive still as the boot drive, if your computer boots you could access through My Computer.

That worked. It is blank.

The first time I tried booting from it and it would not let me. Now that I see it has 1.8 of 2gb free space I realize there isn't an OS on it.
That was a lot of trouble for such a small drive. But at least now I know. Ignorance is not my obstacle to discovery. Obstanance... maybe.

Thanks to all for the help. I appreciate it.

Just remember that 2gb ATA66 drive will hold a few folders of photos and run slower at the 4,200rpm speed if that fast. For storage and backup here I just added a 500gb sata to rememdy that.

Ok, I've asked this question on here before but here it goes again. Can I use my desktop computer to access a laptop hard drive that I have removed? Some one told me to use a drive caddy. That is about $30 or so. Isn't there a ide connection that I can just connect to the drive and my desktop computer to access it through "my computer" like I did the other one you were helping me with? I know this one has windows XP on it though. So what would be the best way to get in and retrieve files or format it for storage?

I just found this http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1086960&CatId=2782

Is this what I need?

Or this? http://www.compusa.com/products/pro...inch_to_3_5_inch_IDE_Hard_Drive_Cable_Adapter

With the ide adapter seen at CompUSA you would also need something like what is often used for floppy and 3 1/2" drives for desktop mainly a 5 1/4" drive bay adapter. Those run about $2 retail. But you have to find one for the 2 1/2" type drive common in portable units to set it up. If you are planning to make transfers like this over an extended period of time the usb caddy would be the easier convenient method and you.

There is also the usb to usb network scheme for direct data tranfers between laptop and desktop as well as desktop to desktop or laptop to laptop. Some are low cost alternatives where the software instead of hard drive is installed on a desktop and laptop alike. There's no need to even remove a drive from either. The links here will show some low and higher cost options for both usb and fireware setups.
