Hi chaps, i'v got two hard drives (1) Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.11,
(2)Seagate Barracuda 250GB can i use these together,if so what do i have to do.I do a lot of online gaming so should i use the 500GB for that and i have a new windows 7 can i put that on the 250GB if so how.cheers.

Well IMO this is what id do. 500GB primary and 250GB a storage unit. The 500GB should have more cache then the 250GB and should be over all faster so it makes sense.

I believe you can RAID0 but its not that impressive for the work involved. I would also leave the drive you use as storage unpluged (aka remove power cable when PC is off and you don't need it) to keep your data safe from surges/etc.

You can always leave the storage drive on though I just prefer it that way to keep the drive alive longer. (you can't power off a drive via windows sadly)

with an RAID 0 u gonna loose the other 250GB from the 500GB one..
Because they need to have the same size or else the RAID configuration
will put the drives exactly the same size and not use the rest.

What id do, was like Twist86 said 500GB primary and 250GB a storage unit. The 500GB should have more cache then the 250GB and should be over all faster so it makes sense but in the 250GB create an small partition (about 1/3 of you RAM) to put the page file on it.And the rest for storage.

I'm well confused i know nothing about computers and i'm trying to learn but being an old man it takes a lot of time to sink in.Shall i install my windows7 on the 250 and use the 500 for my gaming.I dont know how to do a partition so can you explain in simple terms for me how to go about it,cheers.

I would put windows and all your programs on the 250gb drive and then leave the 500gb for all your data.

Johnb, when you say put windows and all your programs on the 250gb drive and then leave the 500gb for all your data.Do you mean load my games onto the 250gb as well as windows7.cheers

Yes, because there are some programs that you can't change the directory to be installed to, they will install to drive c automatically. So there is no sense in having programs on 2 different drives.

I personally would do it the other way around.

500GB for OS, games, programs etc
250GB for data storage.

I know for a fact that on my old system I had a 180GB HDD as my main and filled it was too easily, I'd have filled a 250GB way too easily because of games and programs, however my 200GB storage drive still has 50GB left on it.

If you need more storage you can always use the 500GB main or even create a partition in it, but either way you will have that space there should you need to install other programs on top. That and, as has been said, the 500GB will probably have larger cache and faster retreival times

Thanks for that chaps,i do like it on here because you can always get help when you want it,thank you again, cheers.
