hard drivve help

is there a free program that will test the data transfer speed of my drive?????

i have two sata 2. hard drives and I woanted to test the Data Transfer speed when I am coping files from one drive to the other.

They are the same type and everything.
Is there any free program to do this?
 
yes there is, try just copy and paste from one drive to another, this will give you transfer speeds, i guess it should be around 70-100 MB/s, if thats just one file, try some files in the region of 5-12 gig. i mean i did and it shows you real test without having to install any extra programs. this will be true speed of your drives as well, since the any program will go faster. so just copy big files over and see.

I copyed a 4 GB file from one drive to the other and it did not give me any MB per sec speed.

The bottum left side of the box just says 30 sec remaining and 15 sec and so on.

What now?????????
 
it will show you the speed, in vista or win 7 you need to press the arrow on the window that shows up its in the bottom left area. i think it says extra info,or something like this.
HD tune is a god way to do it yes. I did that, but it is not true speed, its as fast as it will go, but the trasnfer speed will be lower. i mean if the 4 GB took only 30 sec. thats 136 MB per seconds, which is very good speed indeed. i mean i only get 110/135 MB and usually closer to the lower mark. so your drives if 30 sec than good.

OK all my Hard Drives are SATA 2. and I know they say SATA 2. Data Tranfer Rate is 3000 MBps.

I think this is right and I know you will almost never get to this speed. SATA 2. is more like 150 MBps or so.

I just ran HD Turne program on my Secondary hard drive that is SATA 2. and the MAX Transfer speed told me it was 122.6 MBps.

And the Minamune Transfer speed was 62.3 MBps

And the Burst transfer speed was 127.1 MBps

Am I right that these are not even IDE tranfer speeds???????
 
NO my friend you are wrong in assuming that they are 3000 MB, is not like that, its 3Gbits, not bytes per second. and therefore if we divide that by 8, since that is the ratio of 1 MB to bits, then we get 3Gbits x 1024 to get it into Mbits, and then divide by 8 to give 384MBytes per second. This is the maximum that you will be able to get. but the transfer speed that you got from running the program would be what you can actually achieve when transferring. and as i said that speed is very good i mean i have sata 2 6Gbits and i only get something like 160MB, and for my SAta 2 3Gbits drives i get as i said the speeds above. this is normal. you know the USB drives, like a pen drive or something, the max they can go is like 400Mbits per second, thats 50MBytes, but they never ever do this speed. so the speed you get is very good. thats the norm.
Not IDE speed, and not even close. well above it.

Well my sata 2. drive never are geting 150 MBps or even 150 MBps they get 122 MBps.

This is not even the speed of a iDE they max at 133 MBps.

And if I look at my drives in device manager and go to properties.
It says transfer mode DMA if avalible.
And Current transfer mode UDMA 6.
 
ok, if you a really want to have a look, go into your bios settings and have a look around until you find you hard drives it will tell you in which mode they are... but as i said 122 MB is good, my 6GB velociraptor sometimes goes at that speed. its ok... if you want super fast like 150 and beyond, get an SSD or at 10000RPM drives, and then between them you will be able to get high speeds.
There is one thing in bios that you need turned on for higher speeds, but i don't remember what it is, it should like in onboard devices tab, or something, its just i am not next to my computer so can;t look it up... But man if you are not satisfied with 122MB you have very high expectations.

sata 2. Tranbsfers data at 300 MBps witch is 3000 Mbps?
 
With sata speeds today, you hardly get close to even 200 megabytes a second. Unless you have an SSD or 10000 rpm drive and the read speed will always be way faster than the write speed. So on a regular sata hard drive, 125 mb/second is a good speed.

when you say the speed is the controler do you mean the interface controles the data speed?

So if you have a sata 2. drive going to an ata 200 interface you mean you will only get 200 Mbps?
 
My laptop sata drive to usb 2.0 external drive only gave me the max transfer speed of 30mbs, sometime only 10mbs.

Thats because its a USB!!! and depending in type and size and quantity of files you are transferring..
USB 2.0 is only 56MBps and max you will ever be able to get is 34MB, that what i get sometimes, but very rarely, most likely 10-20MB/Sec

1MB = 8Mb 1Gb/GB = 1024Mb/MB
so for the 1.5 you do 1.5*1024/8 = 192 and for 3000 you do 3000/8=375

1.5Gb = 192MB
3000Mb = 375MB

To get speeds close to 200, thats between two SSD or 10000RPM, since if its just to a normal drive it will go slower.

I best thing I can say is that the hardware we have is nowhere near close to giving the speeds that the controllers allow.

SSD is fast, but the ram is still faster, I wonder if some one will make some ram drives with internal batteries keep data alive and internal SSD as backup.

That bring another question, how much ram do a system need? I would say if you can afford them, get as much as the system allowed. if the system allow 32gb fast Ram, then you maybe able to turn off the windows pagefile, you won't have to wait when you want to switch programs.
