Hard Firewall?

Hey I was wondering if there was such a thing as a "hard" firewall for extra network security at home? Such as a hard firewall between the router and cable modem or between the ethernet port and ethernet cable? Is there such a thing?
I'm thinking like VPN kind of stuff. Thanks!

Almost all routers to my knowledge have what is called an SPI firewall built into it. Then you can also download certain firewall distros of linux and load them on a small cheap PC and use them as hardware firewalls, or if you want to spend lots of money you can also buy network equipment that is built for that, ie google search a fire box.

There are additional "fireboxes" and such. I've not had much experience with the, though, so I don't know how they work or anything.

Also, just last night, I was playing with the firewall options for DD-WRT. It seems to have quite a few options with this "Firewall Builder" software. If you have a supported router, you should check it out.
