hard time with figuring out vid card

i'm torn between the $169 radeon 3850 and the $250 8800gt (with company of heroes included).

i will likely buy a few newer games, but i won't buy every new game that is out until i have to upgrade cards. and i'll likely play them all on 1280x1024. i kind of want to play company of heroes, but that card is actually out of stock on newegg and it may not be the same deal when they get it back in stock.

i think the 2850 is everything i need, but i'm wondering if spending the extra $80 is worth it?
 
I think it would be worth it, the 8800GT whoops a 3850. The 3870 is a great card too at $250. Right now, if your local best buy has them in stock, they have the 512mb 8800GT on sale for $237.
 
Frankly if you're not gunna be cranking the details and resolution to the max, you wont really be needing the 8800GT.

And If you don't plan on playing every single new game coming out as well, I would say just buy the 3850 and save the money.

You might also wanna consider going for the 8800GT 256MB which is cheaper and runs games just as well as the 512 version just at lower resolutions.

The 8800GT is obviously the superior card, but ther's no point in buying a Porsche if you plan using performance that a Mustang could achieve too.

well i kind of agree. i mean if i'm not playing all the big games out right now, when i finally want to play the newest big games, the 8800gt will be outdated.

Yeah, I agree. The 8800gt (512mb) is cheapish and powerful, it will last longer than a 3850. The 256mb version, while early benchmarks indicated otherwise, has trouble even on a 1280 x 1024 resolution in certain games. 256mb is no longer sufficient, and this point will only be emphasized going into the future.

I just got it thursday, installed it friday. Its the PNY 512mb stock clock. Im looking for $240 shipped. the 1year warranty was upgraded to the 3-5yr warranty. Reason for selling I just got 2 8800GT BFG from best buy. I also have a EVGA 8800GTS 320mb for $190shipped.
 
yeah, now the price has been raised $20 on that $250 8800gt to $270, which is $100 more than the 3850 AND it's still not in stock. while i know it beats the 3850, $100 is enough of a difference to where i feel justified saving the money.

besides, my 20" lcd monitor's max resolution is 1400 x something, so i won't even be playing on the higher resolutions anyway. as long as the 3850 comes within 5-10 fps of the 3870 or 8800gt in the lower resolutions on most games like it's advertised in the link below, the 3850 is probably the better buy for me.
