hd is dying get a new one install it and copy the important files you have.
Or just clone the disk.

If you don't your disk will die in a matter of seconds, hours, days or weeks could be anything. My advice is don't wait for it.

Vipernitrox hit the nail on the head with the good warning there. The read/write heads on that are going to "foobarville" on you there. At least you have a 5 second countdown to work with!

One reason people ask why I have several drives instead of one installed on the build here shows how to backup things from one drive to another until burning to data dvds just in case of? Two ide and two sata drives to divide between XP and Vista at the moment. The sata drives are twice the size of the ide models so one can hold two drives worth of files. If one of the sata drives take a walk the other still can backup the ide drives.

Mine makes a buzz noise at startup and it performs super, should I run a diagnostic? What do you guys suggest as a diagnostic? It's WD 250Gb SE16

i have a 3 harddrives and there all under warranty how do i know which one it is?. because it only does it sometimes so i cant listen out for it. is there like a program i could use to find out. I have nothing thats really important on it that i couldn't get back.

If you are only hearing these sounds at post time and rarely when Windows and even programs are active it's far less likely to be the default OS drive you are booting from. The sounds heard are when the bios tests all drives installed on the system. It's also possible that it may an optical? You could try unplugging one of the other two 250s to see if you still hear it. If you still hear with both unplugged assume host or optical drive.

yeah i would do as PC eye says, check em out one by one. or put one in a external enclosure and run some programs on it, defrag it, or something that puts the drive to work.

Generally when a hard drive goes the clicking is regular until... doa time! But if this is only heard at post time when all drives see a quick test it could also be the drive motor on the optical drive or the worst second or third hd installed. Just make sure all power is off when going to unplug or plug a drive in. You don't want to make matters worse!

yes, i remember when my freinds use to hvae hard drive lciking troubles and there comp. wouldn`t boot.... it was as easy as new hard drive and reinstall windows..

Someone had an old Packard Bell brought to me to look over when nothing would load at all. The single beep and then nothing. The drive simply quit there and saw the old 1.4gb WD I once used go in to replace the 1.2gb Seagate they came with at the time. The system the last I knew still runs now. It shows a drive can go at times without any sound heard. But the clicking sound is a definite warning if you are hearing that.
