harddrive or motherboard; or new computer

Hello,

My aunt punched her 3-year old Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop... god knows why! Anyways.

Now, when I try to start her laptop, it will not boot because it says:

internal hard disk drive not found.
To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive.

No bootable devices - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility.
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics.

I am guessing her harddrive, motherboard or both are physically damaged. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting it fixed or buying a new computer? My aunt is kind of looking at buying an all-in-1 desktop. However, I am biased against any form of desktops and think she needs to stick with laptops. Those all-in-1 desktops are heavy, over 20 lbs, which just seems archaic for computer technology although I know it's not.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you,

Nichole

I don't recommend the all in one systems. If anything goes wrong, it will have to be sent in for repair. A regular desktop system would be better in my opinion. Less chance of it getting broke and it lasting longer. If she literally punched the laptop, its most likely got internal damage. You can take the hard drive out and attach it to another system to see if it gets recognized. If not, then the drive is dead.

Had exact same problem the other day, ran pc check to test the hard drive and it failed every test, i would say it`s most likely the hard drive that is faulty.

Thanks John. I was going to see if my friend's harddrive reader could get the files off the potentially damaged harddrive and in the process find out then if it's the harddrive or the motherboard. I will definitely tell her about the all-in-1 advice. I don't think she should get one either. I have no idea what possessed my otherwise sane aunt to punch her laptop.

Thank you!

Nichole
