By simply downloading a Linux tarz or iso image you won't wipe out Windows on any system. I store Linux in folders here. If you were trying to run a Linux installer that could cause some problems. Which version of Windows are you running there? For XP booting with the recovery or full install disk allows you to reach the recovery console to try the "Fixboot" and "Fixmbr" commands to rewrite/restore the boot information and mbr itself. Vista has it's own automatic repair tools as as option when booting with that version's installation disk. The last option if everything else fails would a repair install of Windows primarily with XP htere.
