Hardrive "blue screen"

I am not the computer wiz, but when i was trying to re-install World of Warcraft (WoW) i was experiencing the Blue screen of death. As many call it, i can't even defrag my computer, it just has this blue screen that says," Kernel_data_inpage_error

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is proplerly installed. If problems coninue, disable or remove and newly installed software or hardware.

Beginning dump of physical memory.... Physical Memory dump complete.


I ran a command called chkdsk c: /r and i got up to step 5 while it froze at 4% i am using a Hewett Packard with windows XP home edition.

Please Help. :o
 
Searching for the problem, I found this...

The wife and I were thinking it was the hard drives battery giving out, but were pretty sure thats not right now, because the data on their is still retained on those ok boots.

*cough* ANYWAY, every error I find on google does seem to relate to the hard drive, along with the problems you're having. My guess would be a failing hard drive.

If you simply have a couple bad sectors, you could try a low level format. Sometimes doing this will resolve the bad sectors. The only problem is you will loose everything. However, if you were to replace the drive, you'd still loose everything...

I don't have a new LLF utility handy right now, but I have been meaning to ask if anyone knew of one. Perhaps I'll go on and do that and you can keep an eye on my thread, if you decide to try that.
 
Like i said, i'm no computer wiz, what is a low level format, and are you sure it could possibly help me? I am willing to do this if it will help.
O and on the blue screen it has this file that is named atapi.sys and i have actually located it is my IDE/ATAPI port driver. it says on the bottom of the error screen something about the file. so..
 
OK try the full low-level format.

1.Create a boot floppy
2.Boot from the floppy
3.In the command line type in
format c:
4.When finished run a FULL scandisk check by typing:
SCANDISK c: /all /surface /autofix
(note: this is to check whether the format hhad a positive effect)

If the problem is fixed, you can reinstall windows.
If you still cant resolve, get a new HDD =] (or you can try the LLF utility that the other one suggested.)
