It depends on what you will be using your system for and how you backup your data. If you get 2-500gb drives then you put them in a raid 1 setup for backup if you want. Or do a raid 0 for faster read/write access. It all just depends on what you are doing with the PC.
The best brands out there are Seagate, Samsung, and Western Digital and in that order of course. Don't really like WD anymore, too many issues with their drives.

Buying 2 hdd would be a better option, although it will cost more.

Beside, u will still have another 500GB to work with.
If u own another external hard disk already, then go for a 1 TB one.

There's nothing wrong with Western Digital drives.
You couldn't pay me to buy a Seagate/Maxtor drive.
Only drive I ever had fail was a Maxtor.

Same here mate.
Really, it doesn't matter what you get. Brand usually is personal preference some of the time.
But I'd say go with 2 separate drives, RAID 0+1 if your board supports it and if you want to have an automatic back up of your files.
