hardrive transfer

okay heres whats going on, i had a laptop, it died. i had data and programs on the laptop. the hardrive is fine. the orginal laptop was replaced by a different model laptop, but i kept the old hardrive. i have a usb adapter for the old hardrive so i can hook it up to the new laptop and view the files easly (on usb). but what i need is a way to restore the programs and files onto the new laptops drive. to have it "The way it was" kind of thing. what are some programs that could do this? seing as its a different model a hardrive swap wont work. so any help would be good=)

if i was unclear and need to rephrase my thoughts let me know. i can sometimes get my thoughts mixed up when posting....

Files of various types like game saves, mp3s, text files can be easily copied to and from the old drive but programs have to see a fresh install on the new laptop. For softwares of all type you have to start fresh all over again to see new program folders created as well as the new entries in an entirely different system registry.

If those programs were preinstalled and came along with the old laptop... oops! you won't have a way to see those reinstalled fresh. Even for those added later you would still need the software disks or downloads to see them back again.

The files that don't have to be installed, such as, txt music and video files, can be transfered easily. But the programs, is a no no. This is because it has soemhting to do w/ the registry i think or something.
 
Since both laptops are two different installations of Windows you are looking at two entirely different system registries. Look at it like performing a full reinstall of Windows where everything has to be reinstalled all over again. That includes the creation of the new folders the programs are installed in as well as the new entries in a fresh registry.

You can also use GParted live for cd in order to copy partitions from one drive to another in order to simply rescue files. That does take a bit of time to see done and once the files are retrieved you have to delete the copy if you plan to install an OS in that drive space.
