Has Another PSU Fried?

Yesterday my Counter Strike Source game shut down and there was a bad smell of burnt circuit board. My computer would not start up after that.

I removed the PSU and jumpered the green and black cables from the 20 pin connector. The PSU fan spins but there is a constant clicking noise.

Can someone confirm that I have had another PSU go on me so I can request a replacement?

Thanks guys

If you had a previous psu die on your recently, then it seems you have an issue somewhere in your system. Is this a very recent build or something you've had for a while? The corsair psu you have is a really good unit and shouldn't have issues with it. Do you have constant power surges or outages where you live?

No I had another PSU go in a different PC. I have had this PSU two years and it has worked fine although I noticed a fan somehwere in the pc getting louder - it must have been the PSU fan struggling. I dont have any power outages.

Ok, then it sounds there was an issue with the psu itself. Is it still under warranty? Hopefully it didn't take any other hardware with it.

Yes it is under a five year warranty so I will now go and request a return with Corsair. Thanks for your help.

I do hope nothing else is gone :(

Since you mentioned two psu's failing at different times it could be power power surges in your providers power supply.
A lot of PC equipment is not really built to withstand surges compared to other home appliances
It would not be expensive or any harm in using a power surge protector for your Pc's.

I have installed a new power supply (Antec TruePower 650W). I tried to start the computer but it only comes on for a second, everything spins up and then it shuts down. it will then automatically try to start up again and after a second shuts down. This is a continuous process. The clicking sound has gone from the PSU but I now have another problem.

Has the PSU taken out my motherboard?

How can I find out what is wrong and how can I test the motherboard?

I have tried a new CMOS battery and with no luck I get the same symptoms

MMM: I already have a power surge protector. :)

When you put the new supply in, did you plug in the 4/8 pin CPU power connector? Alot of boards will do that without it.

There is no CPU power connector that I am aware of. I have only plugged in the heatsink fan into the motherboard. There has never been any power cable plugged into the CPU.

I also think that my motherboard has gone. Tommorow I will remove everything from the case and just plug the power supply, CPU and monitor into the motherboard. The motherboard should then POST, is this right? If the motherboard does not POST then it is fried?

Is there a way to determine whether my motherboard or CPU has been fried apart from buying them new and testing them?

It has a CPU power connector and yes, you need to plug it in.

This will be your issue.
