Exactly. I boot to the desktop and have the Windows 7-style start menu back, I rarely notice the new flat UI.
The best part? I didn't even change anything, it did that automatically after an update. Although booting on Metro UI isn't that much of a big deal, it became more Win familiar to boot on desktop.
And games do work, unless you're trying to play some 15 year old games... And for most of them you can find a way to play them on Win8.1 anyway. But if you're going Linux, Ubuntu has an app called playonlinux if I'm not mistaken that I used in order to play old games such as Stronghold and AoEII
