Have a problem with getting slowed down

Whenever I have 15-20 IM's open at the same time on AIM with various friends, family, and co-workers on AOL Instant Messenger, my computer starts moving really slowly. Why is this? Is this the processor? Is this Memory? What do I need to upgrade to make it not so laggy and almost shut me down when I have that many IM's open at once?

I don't know if this is where I can ask this, but any help would be appreciated!

First welcome to Computer Forum. Please be sure to review the rules.

As far as your question goes it is probably your cpu and ram. If you listed your pc specs we could narrow it down more. My best guess is you have an old processor and minimal ram.

Welcome To Our Forum :D

What you are experiencing is technically called a BottleNeck

Basically what is happening is A delay in transmission of data through the circuits of a computer's microprocessor.

The delay typically occurs when a system's bandwidth cannot support the amount of information being relayed at the speed it is being processed.

There are, however, many factors that can create a bottleneck in a system.

Bottlenecks affect microprocessor performance by slowing down the flow of information back and forth from the CPU and the memory.

If all of the components of a system are not able to feed the same amount of data at the same speed, a delay is created.

For example, a 2GB processor will be severely bottlenecked by an 800MB memory bandwidth.

Once we know what CPU and Ram you are using, We should be able to help you to either

A: Fix the Problem

B: Recommend What actions you can take to increase better Multi-tasking.
