Have i got enough power

as som of u may know im looking to upgrade my computer now i got a job. My current power supply is 400W +12v - 17A (think thats wot i gota tell ya)
Im looking to get a pci-express MOBO with SLi
1 gig ram
AMD 64 processor
Geforce 7800 gt card
Im gona need more power for this setup arent i?
wud i need about 550W with +12v - 30-35A???

I think you'd be ok with that power supply as long as you don't have A LOT of other components. You can run 2 6800gt's and a Athlon 64 3800+ with other components on a 400W so I think just one 7800gt card would be ok to run with the same amount.

WATTS dont matter much

but wuth an A64 and a whopper of a card like a 7800GT 400w might jsut be minimum requirements.

Really 17A is not enough on the 12v rail IMO. I'd be looking for at least 25A to keep a good power flow under stress or in games and such.

If you want you could get a larger watt PSU with good amps, but i think a 400w with decent amps will perform jsut as well if it's a good quality brand like OCZ, seasonic, etc.

I got a ROSEWILL RP550 and its superb. For $75 you get 550 watts and 35A on the 12v. the other rails also have sufficient amperage too. I'd say for the money thta might be your best bang for buck PSU, but you might prefer a bigger brand name i dunno.

ye i think i mite buy a new 1, sell my old one as its only about 3 months old, then put that towards a new one. Also i forgot to mention that in a few months im gona do 2 x 7800 SLi config, so ill defintiely need more juice ;)

Make sure you get a good name brand PSU and not a cheepy 500 watt power supply. Not all PSUs are created equal! (I've sure learned that)

They dont? This is news. Id like you to run a 6800GT on a 12V@10A 400W psu

DOPE!

I meant WATTS! lol...need to fix that. most people look at watts only to decide what PSU to get, and thats not smart. sry for the confusion.

my current psu has only a 12v@18 or something. i bought another psu off ebay that has 12v@30, i hope this will fix my 6600gt popup message saying something about not having enough power and it will lower is functions. NVIDIA SENTINAL i think! quite annoying.

ye i read the faq on PSU, its all about amps, and especially if ya gettin a high end card u need good 12v rails
how bout this 1:
Tagan TG580-U15 580W ATX2.01 Easycon SLi Compliant Modular Silent PSU
it say current on the 12 v rails in 35 A
and it says the max output is 20 A on both 12v rail 1 and 2

wot 1 is the most important, its max output rite.
