Have to reset computer to make drive work??

I have a strange problem with a Benq DVD ROM drive and a NEC DVD writer. It seems that to make them read a CD or DVD you have to reset the computer with a CD or DVD in the drive, otherwise it just won't read the media, am I just mad or is this a hardware/software problem?

Thanks.

Thats really strange....i think the first place to start would be to make sure one is set to master and the other as slave. It sounds as if there is not a physical problem with the drives but some sort of software conflict. If that does not help, lemme know.

I have swapped the master and slave round on both and also changed the way the wire connects to it but nothing. I still have to start the computer with cd's or dvd's in!

Yer i have but with no success. I even had the hard drive as slave to one of them but still no luck!

you could always look for firmware updates for these drives. check the manufacturer's website for each drive... be very careful you get the exact model tho. Do they work OK on their own?

hmmm.... are your hard drive(s) IDE... if so do they work ok... it could be a problem with your ide channels... what that problem would be i haven't a clue ;)

My hard drive and dvd players have the same connections- IDE, and the hard drive works on either wires. also the 2 dvd players are on seperate wires so it isnt a conflict such as that either
