Having Performance Issues

I just recently purchased a computer through IBuyPower.com (which I think may have been a mistake) I am running a Athlon 64 X2 4200+ processor with an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce4-SLI Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394 Dual PCI-E mother board, the EVGA version of the GeForce 7950GX2, an Audigy SE sound card, 2 gigs of Corsair XMS memory, and a NZXT PRC-550 550W power supply. When playing games such as "Command and Conquer Generals," I notice when in a skirmish game, as the computer controlled armies get more units, the game starts to lag, not getting poor framerates, but will run for a moment, and then freeze for another, and then run again. I had 3 gigs of memory, 2x 1 gigs and 2x 512 megs. I was told by a friend that having two different sized memory sticks could create a problem, so i removed the 2 512's, which did nothing for better of worse. It also seems that I am not getting the framerates that I should be. (Runs the Counter-Strike Source Stress test @ 89.7 FPS) I hope that someone could help me solve this problem. Thanks for your time.

That's an Electronic Arts game. EA makes crappy games. They all have performance issues because their programmers don't know how to code. I'm not convinced you can fix that. You might want to look at your HDD as a possible culprit, but that would be all I can think of.

Yeah, that could be something revolving around the harddrive. Disabling's the swap file's always an idea, just to see how it affects performace. However, as SirKenin said, EA games do lag. I know Need For Speed Most Wanted can be pretty laggy on my system, even at "lowish" settings.

As for the RAM, definetly ditch the extra 1G and keep with two identical sticks. I've never compaired performace to duel and single channel, but I'm sure it'll make some difference. Maybe not too much in games(which rely more on your GPU) but elsewhere it should...

If you disable the swap file you will need a lot of ram, you might have a lot of running process for your computer to slow down like that.

Are your drivers up to date? Back when I played C&C: Generals on a crappy 1GHz computer, it ran fine. Used to play it so much. So, you're computer should be able to play it easily.

When only windows is running, I only use 20% of my memory, and in Generals, I usually dont get above 60% usage, nor does the cpu get maxed out at any point. Also, it isnt just on generals, that is just where i notice it the most. On pretty much any game that puts much stress on the system, I notice a lag when there is a lot going on, yet my ram and cpu still never get close to max. Right after I got the computer I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows, could that have messed something up?? How do you disable the swap files?
