Having trouble partitioning hdd...

Has anybody had trouble partitioning their drive?

I've got this REALLY OLD laptop running XP.... I'm looking to install Linux in the next few days, provided I can get all my ducks in a row.

I tried once before and it didn't work, and I don't want to get into all the gory details here, but I THINK it was because the laptop didn't want to create a partition big enough.

Is this familiar to anyone... I used a free program to partition it, and it still said that despite my 250GB hard drive, it only wanted to make a small partition.

Does anybody know of any common reasons for partition failures.... Thank you in advance!
 
Like above, more info needed. Does it have the whole 250 under one partition? You wanting to shrink the one now and create another one. Or does it have some unallocated space? How much space have you used now?
 
Hi guys,

I have 2 partitions currently, one is NTFS and the other unformatted...

NTFS is 75 GB, the other partition is only 7.8 MB

NTFS is a system partition and is "primary" type...... The other is logical

My question is, how do I prepare these partitions to operate both my Windows and Ubuntu operating systems? Plz tell me it can be done...... Thank you!!!!!!!
 
you say you have 75GB...but the capacity of the drive is 250GB...where is the other 175GB partition??.....
 
Take a screenshot of your desktop. Upload it to photobucket (you can use your fb account) then copy the link and post it here.

If you only have 75GB you may be outta luck. 30 ish GB isnt enough for windows and probably not for Ubuntu, (may be).

You need to right click on the primary disk and select shrink partition. Shrink it by what size you want the new partition to be. Done.

Do this at your own risk, and Im assuming you have back up etc.
