Having trouble playing AVI files

Hey guys, my dad's laptop wont playback AVI video files, only the sound is produced, no image (both Winamp, and WMP). So I thought it could be some codec or plug-in missing. I went into Winamp's site and downloaded a plugin for AVI playback but it couldn't install because of a dll missing.

Any ideas? Running windows vista 32b

Why not just use VLC;

Download DIVX for codecs.... and install that, and VLC is better

download the(full) K-lite codec pack

serves me well
