having trouble with a build

So after getting all the pieces together and spending quiet a bit of time figuring out how to put it all together I got it to turn on. It won't stay on for more than 30 seconds or so and I cant get any video(using a VGA cable) so I am wondering if this might be a common problem. If anyone could let me know what they think I would appreciate it.
 
Did you use the brass standoffs between the case and motherboard? If not, this will cause a short and the symptom you describe.

Could be an issue with your memory have you tried removing a stick or two of memory and seeing if the problem still persists? I'd try that and se how you do.
 
How exactly do I do that? When I just Googled it it said I needed to hit buttons on the keyboard but it isn't reading any keyboard and nothing is coming up on the screen.

Ok, to reset that I have to remove and replace the battery because I do not have a switch, is there an easy way to remove the battery on a gigabyte motherboard? I can't seem to figure out how to get it off and don't want to force it too much and break anything
 
I have never actually had to reset the CMOS before by removing the battery itself, but if you can download the manual for your motherboard from the Gigabyte website that should tell you how to do it.
 
Its the battery on the motherboard. There is a notch on it where its holding it in. Take a screwdriver and put pressure on that notch. It should pop out.
 
Two questions.

I know it was asked. But you do have the standoffs in the (right) places?
Do you have the 4/8 pin CPU power connector plugged in?
 
So, I tried the battery and it didn't change anything. I believe I have the standoffs in the right places(where the holes align on both the motherboard and the back of the metal case). I do have the 4/8 pin cable plugged into the motherboard.

Edit: I have a 4 pin cable plugged in there is an 8 one next to it but I don't see anywhere to hook that in.

I had almost the same problem. After a build I still only got a black screen, nothing else, which was the reason I replaced the mobo, RAM, CPU, and fans. I looked up how to ck the PSU which I did and when I plugged everything back in it worked. BUT the main cause of the initial breakdown of my first mobo was a bad USB port. The USB was shorting out the board. Wasnt easy to figure out and cost some $$ but its working great now...:) DONT give up !
 
Well, that was going to be my next question. Could it just be the a manufacture problem with the mobo? as in one I could file a claim with them and possibly exchange it and see if it works?

a 6770 Radeon Graphics card
RipjawzX 32 gigabyte ram
a Baracuda hard drive (I don't remember the exact specs and I cant find the box right now
and a 500W PSU
