Hd 5850/5870

I'm still torn between those two cards.

To me, the 5870 seems like an overclocked version of the 5850. (I'm probably wrong)

I'm definitely getting them because of the DX11 support, just to be ready for anything, for a while. :)

I hate using my 8500GT, everything 800x600, it's disgusting.

ANYWAYS.

Yeah, what do you think of the two?

The 5850 is a better contender though, looking at the price.

I would just like to know the difference, performance-wise, between the two.

Just the brand.

ATI makes the chips, and different manufacturers make the boards.

Either of those brands would be good, but XFX usually has double
lifetime warranties. :good:

I'd go with the 5850 purely because you can overclock it to 5870 speeds. and it will be cheaper.

Yea I would probably go with the 5850 to of course if I had the extra I wouldn't mind having the 5870 either. Also you should know that the res does not depend on your graphics card it depends on your monitor. The 8500GT can support resolution up to 2048 x 1536. So I different GPU is not going to give you higher resolutions. You will have to get a new monitor for that.

I know that, but the higher the resolution, the more the card has to work, cutting FPS.

I use 1280x1024, but when it comes to games, I can NEVER use it.

Is it a safe overclock? By that I mean, is it going to heat up really fast if someone does it? I'm just curious, not like I'm going to overclock it, its not my style.

But I heard Sapphire has better cooling.

and that XFX has horrible customer service.

Also I haven't been able to find the 5850 on sites like TigerDirect, and NewEgg.

Just the 5870's.

I refer to those sites because they are Canadian as well as being American. :)

Go with what you like, but cooling will be fine on both, XFX does not have poor customer service from experience. If cooling is bad you can get a cheap after market heatsink that will work perfectly fine and cool it right down.

Overclocking is safe, but probably not too good an idea to go too far on stock cooling because of the cooling issues as you say.

both will perform just about exactly the same, the difference in performance will be minimal.

I would go with the 5870 if you can afford it, better to have better so it lasts you longer, but make sure that you power supply can handle it, what the PSU that you have (can't believe nobody asked this earlier :P )

I see what your saying now what game do you play that lag with higher res.

Overclocking a GPU is nothing like overclocking a CPU. You don't have to go into the bios or anything or raise your voltages. All you have to do is open CCC and move a little slider. I overclocked my 4850 from 600 clock to 700 clock and saw a 1C raise in temps.

Both Sapphire and XFX are good brands and both have good costumer service. I like XFX more because they have double lifetime warranty and they don't put those ugly girls on their cards.

oh man xD then i would suggest that the OP goes to US buys his card then goes back or goes to newegg.ca :D

Thanks,

I've been a little light on the O.C. b/c I am still learning alot in the PC world. But based on your post - I jacked my OC up a bit - so I'm going from 738 to 806 - instead of 750. Got my EVGA Precision open on the other screeen - and all is good.

Might want to add EVGA to the list of good brand with good C/S too.

Yea when you OC a GPU your not raising the voltages so the temps pretty much stay the same. You can raise the voltages in the bios if you won't and OC it more but that is unnecessary.

EVGA only makes Nvidia GPU's we was talking about ATI and there new 5850/5870. Anyways yes EVGA is a good brand but has nothing to do with what this thread is about.

I only use TigerDirect because their store is in driving distance. And if they don't have anything they do on their website, they can always ship it in.

But I will check what it comes out to on NewEgg.ca with shipping and everything.

Though the Canadian side doesn't have the XFX up, yet.

I'm just not an online shopper, mostly.

I jsut did a price check on newegg.ca to ontario and it came to $489.66ca Shipped for HD5870.

which is still cheaper that tiger
