HI, I have desktop computer pentium 4, SATA, HD doesn't have jumper, I have two drives, I put one jumper at slave the other on cable select. I can not use any of drives, BIOS shows HD at IDE fourth IDE and first drive at primary slave.
drives work and has no problem. any suggestions?
thanks

How many HDDs are in this thing, and what kind are they ? From what you have said it appears that you have 3 HDDs, 1 SATA, (NO Jumper), and 2 IDE, (One Jumpered as Slave and the other as Cable Select).

Using "Cable Select" on an HDD makes the drive on the end plug master, and the one on the middle plug slave. If you have the drive which is set as "Cable Select" at the middle of the cable, then both drives are set as Slave and that is not going to work. The bios will not pick up either in those circumstances. Ideally just reset the cable select drive as master. If that still leaves a problem, check in the bios which drive is set as the first HDD boot device.

my hard drive is maxtor withno jumper and I have a DVD player and a DVD writer which I put one to slave and one CS, do you suggest that I make one DVD master and one Slave?

You need to set one to master and one to slave or both need to be set at cable select. You can't have one cable select and the other slave.

My advice would be set one to master and the other slave.

And as far as the Hd getting assigned 4th ide, don't worry about it. Its the sata channel your drive is on.
