What's one of the best drive backup programs? If possible, I'd also like it or something to do automatic backups.

I was also wondering if the drive is at risk if I keep it plugged in, like if the PSU fails, will both drives (the main and backup), be safe? Do I have to worry about a possible virus attacking it?

There a a lot of backup softwares, free as well as paid. Here's the list.

i would personally recommend Acronis true image. it has got all u need.
 
I just backed up my drive with Acronis, though my main drive is using 441GB, and Acronis only backed up 373GB..
