yeah one of the 40 gigs i had did that, it was a generic device though, so i didnt know how to like take action on it, lol....but like just make sure its that drive, if you have multiple drives unplug all and just test every one of em, one by one....if it is the drive and you do not have a warranty on it then it wont matter if you crack it open, fish around see what you find, mine had piece of the cable which pulls the read/ write head, just flying around in the drive........so see what you can find
