for two days my hd drive was making funny noise now and then? now its ok no noise. this is the first time i encountered such noise coming from HD. does anyone know why?
all answers are appreciated
thank you

its a 120GB primary drive n had about 1.6GB left when it was making noise, the noise was like banging a piece of metal with a spoon contineously...not a loud noise but fairly noise

First of all... are you positive it was the HD making the noise? Secondly, have you lost any data from that hard drive?

positive that noise was coming from HD and have not lost any data at all. it was very unsual. what do you think?

yeah more like clicking noise but harder... i never heard it before either i had that HD a little more than 1 year now.

yeah one of the 40 gigs i had did that, it was a generic device though, so i didnt know how to like take action on it, lol....but like just make sure its that drive, if you have multiple drives unplug all and just test every one of em, one by one....if it is the drive and you do not have a warranty on it then it wont matter if you crack it open, fish around see what you find, mine had piece of the cable which pulls the read/ write head, just flying around in the drive........so see what you can find

You can try a defrag to eliminate/reduce the possibility of excessive 'tracking' and 'seeking'

Praetor just told you.. defragging.

from start menu: all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> Disk Defragmenter
