HD Space in Vista

I ordered a T61 with Vista Ultimate preinstalled on a 100gb hard drive. When it came I saw in My Compter/Control Panel/Partition Manager that there was indeed a 93.1 GB hard drive with a 6.3 GB hidden partition for system recovery and a visible 87.8 GB for the OS. I also saw that there was about a GB of software preinstalled with the OS. However, of the 87.6 only about 55 GB are available. The OS cant take up 30 GB!?!. Im wondering whats using this enormous amount of space. thanx

Probably lots of pre-installed crap.

You can use a program like TreeSize to see which files/folders are taking up the most space.

My HP drivers take up 234MB, that with all the crap that comes with it, required to use all the cool "features".

I can see the installed programs in control panel, the total says only 1 GB is there more somewhere? Its actually not all useless, I only unistalled a couple things. The rest of it is part of vista, those "cool features" I guess. System restore is the only thing that makes any sense, I mean we're talking almost 30 GB!!

Lets also not forget the megabyte to gigabyte conversion misconception; that a gigabyte is 1024 megabytes rather than 1000 that people mistaken with.

vista is 15 GB?! wow I didnt know that. my docs is essentially empty cause I just installed the OS. havnt really put much on it yet, thats why I was so suprised. But between system retore and 15gb for the os its starting to make sense
