HD4850 upgrade isnt much of an upgrade

Just got my HD4850 today as an upgrade from a 9600gt. I see absolutely no FPS increase between the two cards. I get 19FPS avg on VH settings 1280x1024 in Crysis. I go into yellow a lot in Containment in UT3 @ 1440x900. Am I running the wrong drivers or is it my CPU or is there something wrong with my card? Im rly disappointed with this card so far, and Im hoping its a mistaek on my part. Im running the 8.9 drivers atm.

Something doesn't sound right, though crysis may be true. Because crysis is extremely biased to nvidias favor.... its optimized for nvidia.

Did you clean the old nvidia driver out before installing the ati card, you may need to run driver cleaner.

Thats not right +1 for thatguys advice.
Try crysis on high instead of very high and see what you get.

well, being the tard that I am I never uninstalled nvidia drivers. I tried UT3 again and I got a little FPS boost but nothing to celebrate about. In containment I still go into yellow and I dip into red in some areas. When I got the card I installed the drivers on the CD, then I installed the 8.9 drivers. Are the old drivers maybe effecting the performance? Ill try crysis again on High and post what I get.

Is it possible that every driver is failing me? Maybe the card is dmged but what is the chance of it running the same as my 9600gt? My CPU cant possibly be dragging UT3 FPS down so much. I dont think theres anything wrong with my RAM. I reinstalled dif drivers prolly 10x now.

perhaps, you've reached the limits of your cpu?

is that possible? my 3dmark06 scores are absolutely horrendous. Im seriously considering going E8400 to see if the problem gets fixed. When I tried playing Crysis last night, the game artifacted like crazy on the 8.9 drivers. /sigh, ill have to reinstall a dif one I suppose.

3DMark Score

SM 3.0 Score

The 4600 is certainly a bottleneck, no doubt. UT3 is EXTREMELY CPU biased with it's processing, that game maxed out my E8400 @ 3.8Ghz or very close to.

Thats what I was thinking ever since I got the game. I also dont see any FPS increase in WAR, I still lag with everything maxxed out just like on my 9600gt. My Crysis frames are also below avg but that game probably pushes CPU as well. Do you guys think a 5600+ would be enough, or do I need to turn over to Intel and buy a E8400? Ill check my other games and post back here.

You got a pretty nice board. Could just upgrade to a 9850. Zipzoomfly has them for 165 buck free shipping. Think they have the 125W model 9950 for around 185.

that might be what I decide to do. I dont want to spend money on a new motherboard if the phenom is close enough to a Q6600.

Just make sure you get a B3 stepping or newer. You may even consider the tri-cores, though if you do have the money, just get a quad.

im using a 9600gt now and im also thinking of upgrading to a 4850. just a quick question, do you think that there would be an improvement for me as im using a Q6600?

Yes. There's no way a Q6600 would bottleneck a 4850 - even if the Q6600 is at stock speeds. You're perfectly fine, and will definitely see an improvement.

Perhaps trying a clean driver install will help.
These instructions are for those that are trying to update their software to the latest version. To update your software, you first need to remove the existing ATI software that is present on your system.

Here's the link for the instructions. http://ati.supportcenteronline.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=20870
