Hdd for os

I have a 1tb hdd I want to use for storage and would like to get another for my os. I have noticed that the smaller drive u get the smaller the cache is, is this because the bigger hdd needs more? Anyway what would be a good western digital hdd to use for mainly the os. Looking for something reasonable I found a 500gb 7200rpm 32mb cache for 69.00 should I just get that?
 
Why would you need so much space for the os? I'd much rather spend a bit more than the above drives on an ssd. Or you could just find a fast smaller one for much cheaper.

A bit more? SSD's are in the hundreds, and 10,000RPM drives are well over $100 as well. Even if it's just for the OS, spending $20 more for twice the space is well worth it IMO.
 
The only thing that makes me iffy on a primary drive 1TB is multiple platters. If you buy from newegg make sure to pay the extra and FedEx it.

I use to get nothing but failures when it came to multiple platter drives and its because of their crappy shipping methods for drives and how UPS drop kicks packages for sport. My last HDD package came ripped and beaten...I honestly thought someone stole it.
 
Well I would rather go smaller than get another big drive. What about Western Digital Caviar Blue WD2500AAKS. Are the blue slower than the black?

Actually intel makes a 40gb one thats $130 and sometimes even cheaper on newegg (was $115 a week or so ago). It's much faster than a 10k one too. Also, the larger the drive, the slower it gets because it has to search over more data so having 1tb isn't good for os. I have a 1tb 7200rpm 32mb cache in my htpc but it's not what i'd want for my os.

40GB is still really low for an OS-only drive. To the OP, are you going to have applications installed on this drive as well?
 
^ it's enough for me but I cant really argue there. Though you can always install programs rarely used on the hdd. The 80 gig is around $230 I believe which isnt that bad, but that's still too expensive imo.

You can get by with a 40GB SSD for your OS, but ideally you would want your programs installed there as well, because other then startup/shutdown time, you won't be seeing any difference with an SSD.
 
Yea I would love to be able to get a ssd but just can't afford that. I'd rather put that money towards something else. Yea I'll probably put a few other things on it but mainly it will be for win7. I really would like to stay around the 50 to 70 dollar range for such a small drive.

it makes installing programs for the average user MUCH easier. if you have a 32gb ssd, your not gonna be able to have many games, programs, movies, you know, things that actually need the speed that the drive offers? a nice 500-1000gb hd is much better for the OS IMO

oh. and didnt check the link, but WD caviar Black drives are my absolute favorites. never had a failure, and work wonders in RAID 0

You don't need to put movies and such on your os drive. The point of an os drive is a small, very fast drive for programs/os.

You guys are forgetting he needs no more space. He HAS a 1tb drive. he just thinks it's too slow and wants something faster for os. You are suggesting something he already has. If he cant afford the 40gb ssd, get a small, fast hdd thats cheap.
 
I bought a 300GB 10,000K Raptor hard drive for my OS and programs, which works well. I would recommend them, but if you want to go with an SSD I would still recommend you have enough space to install all your applications and then some.

Thank you! The only person that is listening to me. I would love to have the raptor but my build is going way over budget already, is it just not worth doing unless i get something like that?
 
really, i think you could just get by for now with a small sata hard drive. call me old fashion but they are always good enough for me. i have a simple 7200 rmp sata 3.0 gb/s hard drive (250 gb i think) and i have no problems with it. if you are planning on installing games and such, the ssd probably wouldn't work too well (many games are topping the 5-10 gb range each). of course if i experienced a ssd i could change my mind, but that is down the road... for now, i would just stick with a sata...

If you can't afford a Raptor, then don't listen to him and get an SSD, which is even more.

Yikes...

I say go with a 7200 rpm 250gb drive and put your os and regular programs on it and throw music, movies, and games on your 1tb. If you look at the prices at that point you are spending the same abount of money for less storage (roughly +or- $20.00)
