Hey on one of my computers i think the hard drive is going bad. I will install linux and restart and it says files are missing. Ocassionaly windows will notify me saying a system file has gone corrupt...

So is this a my hard drive going bad? I dont want to get a new one if i dont have to. Thanks

Have you OC'd any part of your computer? Sometimes when you overclock certain hardware it gives you corrupt file errors.

No i havent. Theres an option in the bios on which setting on how fast i want the laptop to run; Max battery, performance, max performance. Would that effect it?

no that wouldn't affect it. and you hard drive may not be going bad, it could just be that your operating system is corrupt which can be caused by a number of things, so you could try reinstalling it. I guess it could be bad secotors on the hard drive though. I'd try reinstalling your OS first

If you want- you could delete everything on it,format it with windows, then install whatever O/S you want.

Yuep, i have a few times, still same deal. I think i am going to buy a new hdd, I have to reinstall windows like once every three days due to file corruptions. Will any 2.5'' hard drives work for my laptop(toshiba dynabook A8/420CME)?

what i get is that you are having two os's one is the linux and the other one is the windows, well if you have formated the linux partition and reinstalled it then the problem may be is of regard with viruse, lying somewhere in your windows partition, what i suggest is to reformat your windows partition as well as linux partition both and reinstall the windows, install a internet security suite like norton 2009 or kaspersky 2009 or any other and update there viruse definitions, scan the system, and go with installing with the linux.
i know its a heck of a work to do, but i think its worth trying.
