HDD making strange noise

Why is my HD making a strange noise? When it spins up on Startup it kinda makes a vibrating & clicking noise. I ran the WD Data Lifeguard and it passed. Do you think it could just be loosely mounted in my case? I have those stupid removable bays. I dunno but here's the screenie of the Lifeguard.

Thanks a bunch:)

Has it always done that? It's normally for a HDD to make some noise when first spinning up...

Clicking is bad, though.

Just because the HD scan doesn't catch the problem doesn't mean it's 100%. Id just suggest keeping everything backed-up you can.

Oh, did you use just a standard scan or is there a longer scan?

What that sounds more like is the read/write head showing signs of failing sometime soon. I run four WD drives here without a sound being heard! The sounds actuall heard at any time are the large case fans. And those aren't niosey either. T_O_O's advice on "backing things up" is the advice to go with on this. Don't get caught with a failed drive and data lost!

yea, typically clicking isen't a good sign with hard drives.
the scan might not have reported anything because its still working pretty well, or because it decided to work at that time.

It's not constantly clicking only about every 10min, yeah, barely noticed. I used the quick scan, not the long scan, I need to do that when I find the time. I've noticed no performance issue with it, is this a very early sign? While I am working today, I will run a full scan.

Thanks

Make sure you listen close enough to it to verify it's from the drive itself and not a fan installed. Sometimes a little dust/debris buildup will cause a fan to start making a few odd sounds. A hard drive clicking? That's never any good!

Now that you mentioned that, I think it's the friggin fan on that X1300. That thing is pretty loud to be so small, it makes a whiny, whirring noise, and it clicks for some reason. Is there some other type of cooling I can put on this before my brother "inherits" it?

I read that clicking is bad ALOT, but I have never had a drive that didn't click (with in reason of course). If you use a tool like HDD Thermometer that polls the drive, it could be that making it click. Close any tool that monitors your drive and see if it goes away.

If you have it isolated to the vpu fan on the card you can go for an even better then stock setup for a good price at this point at newegg. xoxide, coolerguys, or some other vendor with vpu cooling accessories. These are seen at lower prices at this time since the X1950s and 7950s follow the 8800s in sales there for addon coolers.

You won't need anything super large as you know already for that model. But the price range is just one thing alone to decide on at http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=576&name=VGA-Cooling or http://www.xoxide.com/vgacoolers.html or maybe at http://www.coolerguys.com/videocooler.html#top
