HDD problem.

Problem: I can not partition my HDD. Brand new. It gets to "verify" and for what seems like forever gets to 1% and then back down to 0%?

compy: Asus A7N8X-X
AMD Athlon XP 1100
3 sticks 256
Maxtor Diamond 8 ATA133 40Gb (old HDD) FAT32
Maxtor Diamond 10 ATA133 80Gb (new HDD)
Updated BIOS after 1st attempt.
Jumpers are correctly placed. Went as far as making it master and tryin by itself.
Using 3.5 floppy system disk.

What am i doing wrong?

Is there something i need to do to the HDD before partitioning it?

no i have not.

Would XP be able to configure the HDD to the current FAT32 system running on my old hard drive? Thats the only thing i can think of thats not being considered during the procedure. It dosent ask me about the system i want to run, (FAT32), it usually asks that before the partition is verified.

And when you say "use XP" do you mean use CD support during the procedure? Or is there a way to use the XP CD to partition and format a new HDD?

The way i know is to use the 3.5 floppy system disk. Is there another way of partitioning and formating a HDD?

The new HDD is just for more space/room on my compy for apps. It will be a second HDD.

And one more question, when and if i finally get it to work right, will i be able or more importantly, run the same copy of XP on the second HDD? If so, will my compy ask me at start up if i want to use the 40Gb or the 80Gb or will i be able to jump from one another?

Though I thank you for your input, i will see what the XP CD has to offer for partitioning and formating new HDD's.
 
when you load up the XP disc, follow the directions to where you want to install it, and make a partition on the new harddrive, then cancel the windows xp install, and boot back into the windows you have on there now, then go into My Computer, right click the new HDD and go to Format

how old is your motherboard, if its very old the bios might need updating to be able to recognise the entire capacity of the disk, if not you'll have to download a utility from the hard drive's manufacturer

Not to be rude, but you might want to read the entire post before responding.

after continually partitioning and formating and deleting the drive. it still comes up 31.Gb of 81gb.

Im stuck and out of ideas.
 
yeah, but you dont mention if you've been to the manfacturer's site to looks for a utility or special driver for the drive.
i think that would be your best bet
 
your right, i havent mentioned it, because the utility it gave me "MaxBlast 4" dosent work properly. So thats a dead end.

Anywho, i figured out why its doing what its doin. So thank you all for your info and directions.

I have the same problem, and since you prolly left this board, does anyone know how to fix this 80gb hard drive that only reads 31gb?
 
First, search for a motherboard manufacturers website. These can often correct this problem. If not, you will need to get some sort of overlay program. It's been a long time since i've had to do this to a computer, so I can't really recommend any modern program, but you may be able to download one from your drive manufacturer's website. If all else fails, a controller card may help. This is a good starting point for more info, and provides a downloadable program for seagate drives (no idea if it works for others):
