HDD Problem

I tried to reinstall windows xp home on my computer. THe HArd drive isnt recognised by the computer when i start up the comp. But when i try to partition the HDD to put windows on it, it creates it and then says it is UNKNOWN and RAW. And it wont let me install windows because the partition isnt a recognised formatt for windows,
ANy help would be greately apreciated thanks.
 
Yes, im booting from the xp cd. FOr some reason it says that xp cant go onto to it because it is not a recognised formatt.
