Hdd Problems - Loosing Data

Hi,

I have just purchased a new HDD for my laptop.

I backed up all my data on an external Maxtor 250 GB hdd and when i installed it back to the laptop and tried to access it - it said that it needs to be formatted. What should i do? I have all my data on this hard drive?

I am using a USB 1.1 Enclosure - buslink - the yellow cover case.

I have Windows XP pro.

how exactly did you go about backing it up, and what all did you save? And are you using the same file format as last time?
 
plug it back into another computer to see if it still works.

even if it doesnt, you might be able to use a program to pull the data off. With an equally huge drive or course.
 
I hope you didn't just file copy the drive to the external and then back to the new laptop drive...

You need to format and partition the new laptop drive, install the OS, then copy the files back to it.

External drives, I believe at least some, do not come initially formatted.
