i have just brought a new 300gb external hdd but when i plug it into my computer it only shows 279gb. is there something wrong with the hdd?

That sounds a bit low, but should be about right. gigabytes by manufacturers are measured as 1000 megabytes, where they are officiall 1024 megabytes. That addes up...

It's correct - 300GB @ 1000 bytes/KB = 300,000,000,000 bytes.
@1024 bytes/KB = 300,000,000,000 /1024^3 = 279.397GB

Therefore your drive will read as 279GB

As The_Other_One says, hard drive manufacturer's advertise hard drives based on 1000 bytes/KB, whereas Windows (correctly) shows them with 1024 bytes/KB

Wierd tho sometimes two "identical" have different capacities :P (got two "160s", one has 149, the other 150 :P)

is there actually 1GB of difference between them, or is there really only a few MB's but it rounded it up to 150GB?
