HDD Usage Problems

I have one HDD where I got a partition of 50G for my OS and 500G for my apps. Well Iv been installing everything on my E drive which is the 500G but everytime I download install or whatever the space decreases on the C and E drives. If I highlight everything on my C drive I only have 17G install on it but if I right click and look at properties It has 35G installed and 14G free. Is there anyway to stop this or should I reinstall Windows7 and cancel my partitions? I have not been installing or downloading anything on my C drive but it still keeps getting less and less free space. Hope this makes any since please help if you can thanks.

Likely your System Restore feature is filling up the part of your hard drive with your operating system in it.

You can delete most of the System Restore points by doing the following:

Hold down the Windows key and press then press R
This should pull up the Run... command box.
Type "cleanmgr" in the box and press enter
Choose to clean your C: drive
The Disk Cleanup after about a minute will pull up another window. Select the "More Options" tab when this new window is pulled up.
Go to the System Restore option and choose to "Clean up..." all your System Restore points except the most recent one. This will delete all your System Restore points except one.

This should free up space on your hard drive.

Try to clean up other files with the Disk Cleanup:

Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Webclient/Publisher Temporary Files

Edit: Also delete data from the "Downloaded Program Files" with Disk Cleanup.

I did that previously again its just a few MBs. I remember a tutorial that would tell you how to change a perimeter in the registry to keep this from happening but I can not find it any longer. What if I were to shrink the partition with the OS on it?

Shrinking the partition with operating system in it will not solve your problem.

Go look for unused programs on the C: drive. I would go to the following in your Control Panel:

Programs --> Programs and Features

Select unused programs and then click Uninstall. Be careful that you are not uninstalling any needed programs.

Edit: I would also change the Pagefile settings.

To do this do the following:

Control Panel --> System and Security--> System
Click on "Advanced Tab"
In the performance section click on "Settings"
Again click on Advanced --> Change in the Virtual Memory section
Change the virtual memory (pagefile size)

Make the initial size and the maximum size the same number. Set the size equal to amount of RAM you have installed.
After making the changes restart your computer.

Yeah none of this is working. So I am going to just reinstall windows and cancel my patitions. Thanks for helping though. That last thing you told me to do with the virtual memory what does that do exactly?

It prevents your system from changing the virtual memory size. A pagefile is like RAM running off your hard drive. It is set low initially to save hard drive space. It is pointless in my opinion because it only saves a few gigabytes in storage on the hard drive and it slows your system down if the operating system needs to change the pagefile size.

It is best to set virtual memory at what I suggested above.
