HDMI Audio Issue

I have a Toshiba Satellite P305. It has S-video as well as HDMI outputs.

Recently I connected the computer to my LCD TV via an HDMI connection. The video works perfectly but I am unable to get the audio to work. SPDIF Interface/Digital Output Device (HDMI) both show up in the sounds control panel along side the default speakers. I have tried every combination of making these my default output devices.

Is it just possible that the HDMI port does not allow audio to be output thru it (which would seem to defeat part of the purpose of HDMI as an all-in-one audio/video solution).

The first thing I did was to ensure all the drivers were updated. I am beginning to think that the hdmi port on my computer is only for video output, despite the fact that hdmi is audio/video
