hdmi to usb adapter

I have two USB 2.0 ports right next to each other on my Dell laptop (in my signature). They're so close together that I can't have my SD card reader and flash drive plugged in at the same time :( I guess I'll assume that I can get a male USB to female USB adapter with a super short cord, but I also have an HDMI port that I never use.

Are their converters, adapters, couplers that would be male HDMI to female USB? :confused:

HDMI and USB are completely different interfaces, you can't turn an HDMI port into a USB port.

As you said, you can buy a short USB extension or just get a USB hub.

Alright, thanks. I know that HDMI is for video and sound, but I had also heard that in some instances at least video could be used with USB. Maybe that was wrong, wherever I read that. Thanks for the links!:)

There are ways to use video over USB, but that doesn't mean you can use an HDMI port for data ;)

I read it all but I don't really understand it. I'm only putting it in here, cuz I remember being confused and this thing appears to be HDMI powered by USB. Might be completely unrelated though. Do you understand it?

Ah, something I have experience with.

So it's a wireless display adapter. You plug the HDMI into an HDMI port on a monitor or TV, and the USB connector into a USB port or USB wall adapter (for power only). You then connect to the wireless display adapter with your device (your device must be compatible, so something like a Microsoft Surface, Windows 8.1 laptop/tablet, or Android tablet).

In the end, it still doesn't do what you were looking for in your OP. You were looking to use your HDMI port as a USB port, which you cannot do.

Yeah, the thing I was concerned about in my OP does not matter now because I gave that laptop to someone.

If the male USB side is supposed to be connected for power, do you mean you would connect it to a female USB port which then leads to a wall adapter? Or do you mean that you would connect it to a female USB port on an actual device such as one of the devices you listed?

I assumed correctly where the HDMI side went, but I didn't know what the USB side did at the end of the short cord. And then I just assumed that there was some kind of wireless connectivity kind of like a Chromecast.
 
The USB cable just provides power for the device, so you can either plug it into a USB port if there is one on the device (such as the projector in our conference room) or you plug it into a USB wall adapter.

It's not quite the same thing as a Chromecast, the MS adapter is used to wirelessly transmit what's displayed on your computer's monitor to a TV or monitor across the room. That's what it does, plain and simple.

The Chromecast can mirror a Chrome browser window on your computer to a monitor on the other side of the room but it also allows streaming of content from the internet to the remote TV or monitor. Once the streaming is initiated, you can then use the laptop, tablet or phone to do other things since the content is being streamed from the internet directly to the Chromecast. The MS adapter can only show the same image that is displayed on your computer monitor.
