HDMI Vid card

pardon the noob question...but I'm a noob.

If i buy a vid card with HDMI, am i simply able to connect it to any monitor/TV with HDMI and will get sound/video coming out of the display? Also do you need a mobo that specifically supports HDMI or is it a completely separate issue? Thanks.

I don't think you'll get sound through HDMI just that easily. I think only some cards can do HDMI audio, and that requires some other wiring in the computer. I'm not completely sure of the procedure though.

Most video cards come with a port that you hook up to the sp-dif output on your mobo (or sound card). You just connect the video card to the sound card or motherboard and you will get audio through the video card via a DVI-HDMI adapter, assuming the video card supports this.

This is the cable

And here is the audio port (on a GTX 280)

I just checked out the video card you were interested in. If you look at the fifth picture, you can see the HDMI audio port (colored white, near the middle of the side). If you look in the last picture, that long cable is the sp-dif to HDMI audio cable that you need to hook up your video card and thus HDMI to sound. As far as I know, as long as your motherboard has an sp-dif output, then it should support HDMI audio through the video card.

ATI 4000 series support 7.1 sound through HDMI
And thus, Go for ati 4850 for your budget.
