HDMI vs VGA?

Well, I'm currently playing my Xbox 360 though my VGA plugs, but I do have a spare HDMI port on my monitor, I was wondering if I should buy a HDMI cable and hook it up from my 360 to my monitor. Would I see a difference? Would it look more clear, better colors, ect..?

I'm playing through an HDMI on my Xbox360, it cleared things up some, but not by a huge amount, worth it though.

Dont get an expensive HDMI one, just get the $20-$30 one, i tried out the $79.99 one, then tried out the $29.99 one, both equal in quality, so i returned the $79.99 one.

If you're just using a VGA cable it will only transmit an analog signal. I don't remember what the "max" resolution is on a VGA cable is, but they're primarily designed to work with the old CRT monitors, which are definitely not 1080 or even true 720p. You can get that resolution to display, but that's not the monitors "native" resolution. It will come out looking a little fuzzy and distorted. However, the HDMI cables and interface are digital and are designed to handle up to the 1080p resolution and higher. (Same thing with RCA and DVI cables; RCA = analog, DVI = digital)

I've still yet to go buy one lol... I'm worried that if I use HDMI chord I can't use my audio cables from my Xbox to use my headset.

You can't use the following resolutions without HDMI for 16:9 screens:

720p
1080p

Those are the best resolutions for a full HD monitor/tv, at least in my opinion.

yes you can... and i do, every day... and its a myth that analog vga cannot carry the signal well, its just as clear as my ion setup thats hooked up with HDMI to the exact same monitor. 1080p comes over just as well with both setups. if your working with a lower class vga cable, then fine. some do have limits, but a regular $15 vga cable is suited just fine for HD viewing. ;)

How? if i unplug my HDMI and use VGA i can't select 720p or 1080p what so ever :/.. I need the HDMI or an VGA-to-HDMI adapter.

I'm able to do 720p with vga but my monitor doesn't go to 1080p something funky with your monitor or something xD

No i think it was a driver issue.. worked when i tried now O.o (was over a year since i used VGA at all. And that was on a 7500GS lmao)

lol nice. its usually because windows has problems with some resolutions. try nvidia control panel and create a custom resolution, 1080p should work fine.

Digital is digital right? Don't pay more for the same cord.

wrong. there are different revisions of hdmi cables that can operate higher bandwidths. you cant really use a cheap hdmi cable to be running 2560x1600 ;)
also, if you are in 1080p, good luck getting your tv to go higher than 60hz with a cheap hdmi cable. the more expensive ones can hit 120hz or even 240hz, but the cheap ones cant carry that much bandwidth

Well the HDMI will help the picture look a bit clear depending on your monitor but if you have full HD such as 1080p and so on with the specs, you will see a major difference it will look awesome, and way clear.
